Karen has recently finished her certification in cancer rehabilitation through the PINC and STEEL Trust and is now available to offer these services at Millwater. Many people are unsure as to what cancer rehabilitation entails or why it is necessary so we hope that this can help anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer or who knows somebody who is has better understand how physiotherapy can help.
What is the PINC and STEEL program?
The PINC program is a rehabilitation program for women who have been diagnosed with cancer and the STEEL program is for men who have been diagnosed with cancer. It involves a comprehensive assessment for cancer treatment related side effects and a tailored rehabilitation plan specific to the individuals needs.
Why Cancer rehabilitation?
If people don't get rehabilitated after cancer it can affect their ability to work, their families, their physical, emotional, and social well-being, their long-term health, and ultimately survival.
With little or no rehabilitation support, people often struggle with long term side effects, returning to work and getting back to normality.
Why see a PINC and STEEL physiotherapist?
Cancer patients are one of the most medically complex populations managed by physiotherapists. Many people are anxious or nervous to start or resume exercise during or following their cancer treatment as they are unsure of what is safe for them to do, are experiencing pain, battling fatigue, or a number of other side effects to do so. Seeing a physiotherapist who has received comprehensive training and mentoring in this field is important to ensure patients receive individualized care and rehabilitation specific to their needs in order to achieve the best possible outcomes in their rehabilitation.
When can cancer rehabilitation start?
Treatment can start form as early as when a diagnosis of cancer is made and can continue throughout cancer treatment into the post-operative phase. A certified PINC and STEEL trained physiotherapist can help better prepare people for what they may experience during their cancer treatment and help to reduce the side effects by identifying these earlier. Rehabilitation can continue beyond this phase as everyone is different a rehab plan that suits their stage of recovery is important.
